Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is a discipline. It is a practice of meeting with a director once a month for the purpose of listening for God’s presence and direction in your life. A spiritual director is a faith companion who listens to your life stories with an ear for discerning the movement of the Holy Spirit. God is the true guide and director, but the human director can assist you in noticing and responding to the inner voice of God and his movements. Spiritual direction is a process or journey into the truth about God, yourself, your relationships, your work and the world. It is part of the slow work of God and transformation into Christ like-ness that all followers of Jesus are invited into.

The premise of spiritual direction is that God is present and active in your daily life in a multitude of (usually unnoticed) ways. When you slow down, begin to reflect, and take a long, loving look at what is happening around you, you begin to become more aware God’s presence and actions. The more you know yourself the more you know God; and the more you know God, the more you know yourself and your direction and purpose. Intimacy with God leads naturally into transformation, healing and action.

  • Spiritual direction is most helpful for people wanting to go deeper in their walk with Jesus. People who are self aware and self reflective. Yet everyone can benefit from spiritual direction if you are open to exploring how God is moving in your life.

  • I begin spiritual direction sessions with a prayer, meditation, or passage of scripture and a time of silence. I like to ask the directee to “take as much or as little silence as you need and begin when you are ready.”

    When ready, you—the directee—will start talking about the reason you are seeking spiritual direction.  It can be as simple as wanting to have someone you can check in with each month as you live out your spiritual practice. Or it could be a life situation you want to explore.  If you don’t know where to start, that’s not a problem. I will guide you with questions designed to help you delve deeper into your life and relationship with God.

  • Typically, spiritual direction sessions are scheduled once per month for one hour, although personal needs may vary.

    Due to the wonderful world of technology, we can meet virtually through GoogleMeet. If you live in the Grand Junction area, we have the option to meet in-person at my church.

    The initial, introductory session is done via GoogleMeet and is free of charge. Subsequent sessions are $60 per session [I am open to dialoguing about this cost]. This initial session is a time for us to get to know each other and talk about what you are looking for in a spiritual companion relationship. There is no commitment required at the end of this session. If you discern that you would like me to be your spiritual director, then we can schedule the first session.
